Sometimes Prince Charming has a dark side.
Small-town girl Katie Morris knew that attending an all-girls college near Yale University, she might meet the sons and daughters of the nation’s leaders. But she never imagined one such son would strive to capture her heart with his promises of a happily-ever-after. However, a dark nature lurks inside her prince, which clashes with his charm. Will Katie be able to hang on to her fairy tale when the man she loves turns into the man she fears?
Since the moment of William Wilkerson’s birth, he had been groomed to take his father’s place in ruling the nation behind the scenes, deciding what laws get passed and who governs. But ruling requires the ability to control, manipulate, and the more William becomes the man his father desires of him, the more he finds himself turning into what he vowed never to be a man who is a threat to the young woman he loves.
When a deal with terrorists orchestrated by his father is revealed, his family’s power is threatened, forcing William to make a choice Sacrifice the young woman he can’t live without, or let everything his father has built, collapse.
What shall he choose?
Enjoy an inspirational Christian fiction novel full of political intrigue and suspense.

I'm gonna save you a whole lot of time here. Read the book's Prologue. Go on, it won't take long. I'll wait. All done? Good. You've just read the book's ending. Yep, that's where the author leaves you, not knowing whether Katie lives or dies. Dang, I hate when an author does that. Gets you hooked and wanting to see how it turns out, and then leaves you hanging smackdab in the middle of the story.
The sad thing is, until I got to the ending, this story was scoring a solid four stars with me. I really liked it. Downey nailed it with Katie, a girl brought up in a Christian home, who goes to church and thinks she's a Christian but really has no relationship with God. I know girls like that, and of course it makes sense how she falls prey to a guy like Keith.
And Keith. Great antihero. You hate the guy more and more as the book progresses, but you can't help but sympathize with him. He reminded me a little of Heathcliff from "Wuthering Heights," total slime but you kind of understood why. Downey had me reading right along, hating Keith and hoping Katie would come to her senses, but knowing she wouldn't and wondering if I was going to end up hoping she died in the end or that Keith would save her.
But I never got the chance. Like I said, the book ends when the paramedics arrive. What a stinking cheat, to get me caring enough for the characters to read through to the end and then leave me hanging. How does a book like that get published? I don't care if the next book is free. You couldn't pay me to read another book by an author who would pull a stunt like that. I'm done with this one.

Privileged American Prince Book 1 edition by JM Downey Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I was extremely unimpressed by the implied message. The girl has no chance of an escape from an abusive relationship, she has a shallow understanding of her own faith and is utterly helpless and yet still somehow hoping for love from her husband. The end of the book implies that he is going to change because he never really meant to hurt her and now he's going to do a 180 and protect her. I felt like any woman in an abusive relationship already would just be encouraged to believe that there was no hope of escape and that the guy would eventually wake up to the abuse he was inflicting. How in the world are there so many positive reviews for this? Spoiler alert The 'villain' is emotionally scarred by his father and thus doesn't realize what he is doing… and he suddenly wakes up to it after inducing an abortion and causing her to nearly kill herself...realizing that he pushed her too far and really loves her? Really? And then he turns to God and suddenly has a change of heart?
I was looking for a mystery suspense darker but not explicit relationships, along the lines of althea romig, and this book seemed to have the basic structure of a dark relationship mystery.
The basic premise is "good" girl Katie meets indulged, wealthy Yale boy keith at college. His family have high political connections, wealth, ambition, and secrets and he has little say in his future career. They eventually marry (after early indicators in their relationship that he was manipulating her and a little obsessive ) once married, the relationship, life and discoveries, turn dark, both personally and proffessionally. Amoungst the relationship is political intrigue, manipulation , vices, corruption and players at the highest levels. Everything a good conspiracy theorist would also love....
Whilst small overtures to christian upbringing were expressed, i could gloss over that part, it was not overtly christian in book one, nor so dark as to overtly offend .
However books 2 to 4 are by and large about evangelical redemption and i could only force myself to flick through to get a general idea of the ending, which i did not find inspiring. I like a final HEA, its fiction...
I would prefer more action, mystery, intrigue, relationship spice, human growth and redemption minus the religion (again it's fiction reading). But the premise of two opposite upbringings finding love but traversing a dark corrupt world and the effect on the relationship, would make for an outstanding adult mystery suspense ,darker relationship read by the right author for that category.
If, like me, you were not looking for the christian element (and to be fair i did finally go back to and noticed it was classified christian mystery suspense by book 2,) read book 1 and envisage your own kind of ending.....
If you liked the christian element, books 2 to 4 will be more to your liking...
This book was between a two and three star for me, I would have given it three stars, but the content is over the top abuse descriptions from multiple people throughout the book. When I say over the top, I don't mean like I don't think it could happen, but the descriptions didn't fit the flavor of the book. At the end, I am supposed to believe the second book will have a different flavor.
For the reason at the end that you sort of believe that you want to know the rest of the story, it makes me want to read more. But, the whole story was a bit ruined by the prologue, I felt.
So, overall, if you want to read a book of horrific abuse, degradation, told in a semi Christian manner, just enough without all the details of a non-Christian novel, but enough that it was just a bit over the top in focusing on the wrong thing, with a small redemption wrap up in the end, pick this one up
Being a Christian I only read books that are written by Christian authors and therefore I'm not usually offended by the material. This book was a total waste of my time and even though the Lord was mentioned in her feeble prayers to help her when she was going against His will it most certainly was NOT a Christian novel. It was full of sex, homosexuality, corrupt men, weak women, drugs, drinking to excess, a man biting the inside of his lip when he was showing emotion, etc. I did read it for over 2 hours hoping it would get better, but then just skipped to the end to see what happened. Surprise. It is to be continued in the next book.........not on my watch would I waste anymore time. Life is too valuable.
I'm gonna save you a whole lot of time here. Read the book's Prologue. Go on, it won't take long. I'll wait.
